Though I’d walked this path from my residence hall at Goddard to the Pratt Library many times during my MFA low residency program, on this occasion I finally saw, really saw, the majesty of beautiful cairn which stood as the path sentinel for many years. The soft forest sounds of cicadas, bird calls, leaves rustling in the breezes, and the far off laughter of hiking children created a memorable sonic backdrop for this photo. The afternoon sunlight contributed the piece de resistance by falling exactly where it would confer mystical blessing on the small Waymaking Cairn in the presence of the elder cairn.

On the Outside Looking In or
Can You Come Out to Play?
Serendipitous was this sighting of another kindred cairn. I was heading for my car in the parking lot which shares a grassy strip with the neighboring small office building. The ground floor window nearest my car had a closed window blind that covered most of the window except the bottom 12 inches.
There, centered on the inside sill was a cairn of five rocks. It seemed it had placed so that the cairn could look out upon the world, even as the world was invited to look in and behold the cairn. The two captions speak to the dual perspectives I experienced in the sighting.
I freely confess, this photo does not rise to the artistic merit of my other photos, but darn it, its the thought that counts!
